The 2nd Annual Turkish Music Festival -

The 2nd Annual Turkish Music Festival will feature music from three traditions that exist in Turkish music; folk music, Ottoman court music, and contemporary classical music of Turkey. The events will be presented by Hoppa Project and feature award winning musicians from the traditional Turkish music and classical music worlds.

Mehmet Ali Şanlıkol is a Grammy-nominated musician who is currently co-director of the Intercultural Institute at the New England Conservatory. Del Sol String Quartet is a San Francisco based ensemble that focuses on contemporary music. The quartet has collaborated with important composers such as Terry Riley, Mason Bates, Frederic Rzewski, Peter Sculthorpe. Shawn Conley is a member of Grammy winner Silk-Road Ensemble. He toured all around the world with the ensemble and Yo-Yo Ma performing works that follow various traditional music roots.

Concert at Asia Society Texas is $30 for general public and $20 for Asia Society members

Friday, January 18 at 7:30 PM

  • Mehmet Ali Sanlıkol, accompanied by Erberk Eryılmaz on traditional percussion, presents a diverse range of music from Turkey and the former Ottoman Empire featuring mehter (Ottoman Janissary band) music, court music, folk music, Sufi music, and more

 

  • Del Sol String Quartet performs Ahmed Adnan Saygun (1907-1991) String Quartet No.1 

 

  • Hoppa Project, conducted by Erberk Eryılmaz, performs selections from the Turkish Five, pioneer composers of the early Republic era, Erberk Eryilmaz's Miniatures Set No. 4, and Mehmet Ali Şanlıkol’s Grammy nominated work Vecd for String Orchestra
